How important is education in your life right now? Do you think students around the world value school the same way you do? Explain your reasoning.

Prompt Response: Education is important in my life even though school can be stressful sometimes. Some students value it because it can help them out of tough situations, while others take it for granted and waste their knowledge on something stupid. Summary: Education matters because it builds important life skills, but not all students value education the same way. Reflection: For me school is important even if I don't always enjoy it. I know it's setting me up for my future and giving me more opportunities. If I stay focused it can help me reach my goals later in life.

Which factor plays a greater role in shaping your future career choice: your genuine interest and passion for the field, or the financial benefits and stability it can provide? In your response, explain which one you prioritize and why, and consider how this decision might impact your long-term happiness, motivation, and overall quality of life.

Prompt Response: Passion because if you actually like what you're doing then it doesn't feel like a chore everyday. Money is important too but if you only pick a job for the paycheck you might feel unhappy. Summary: Passion is more important than money when choosing a career I feel like because it keeps you motivated and happy in the long run. Reflection: If I choose a career based on what I enjoy, I think I'll feel more satisfied with my life overall. I'll want to go to work and get better at what I do.

After viewing your classmates’ presentations, which cultural group did you find most interesting? Explain why. Then, reflect on how this presentation changed or deepened your understanding of that culture.

Prompt Response: I didn’t see any of my classmates presentations for real but from what I see in real life I would say that Latino and Hispanic stood out to me because it’s  traditions like family gatherings, food, and celebrations play a big role in everyday life.   Summary:  It highlighted how culture shapes people’s priorities and values.   Reflection:  My understanding of Hispanic/Latino culture became deeper because I realized it’s not just one single experience, there are many different backgrounds, countries, and traditions within it.

Think about a film that represents your culture (or a culture you identify with) in a positive and meaningful way. Explain how the film represents the culture and why this portrayal matters. Be sure to include specific examples from the film.

Prompt Response: Akeelah's journey from south LA to the national spelling bee is made possible by the support she got from her community, family, and friends. Summary: This film follows Akeelah, a girl from Los Angeles, as she competes in the national spelling bee. With the help of her mentors and community, she overcomes challenges to achieve success, illustrating the power of collective support. Reflection: I found this movie inspiring because it shows how important community is for success. It highlights that people supporting each other can help someone reach their goals and it celebrates the intelligence and spirit within the African American community.

What is the most exciting thing about graduating high school for you personally? In your response, explain what you are looking forward to most after graduation (college, career, independence, travel, etc.) and why it matters to you.

Prompt Response: The most exciting thing about graduating high school is that it gives me freedom and I get to go to beauty school and I can start planning and organizing my business that I want to have. I get to just do what I want and celebrate my achievement from those 12 long years I've been in school. I get to experience more about adult hood and I honestly think i'm happy about that even though it sounds scary to me because I won't have to depend on anyone, but it'll give me more responsibilities. Summary: Graduating gives me the chance to go to beauty school and learn about all the things I need to know so I can start my business while still in school handling business in the real world since I'm going into young adult hood. Reflection: Graduating high school gives me more freedom in life to do what I need to do in the world in order to reach my goals and to do good in life and make myself more proud.

Clothing is often tied to identity and culture. Describe an outfit or style you like that may not fit what others expect from you. How have people responded, and what does this reveal about stereotypes in society?

Prompt Response: I think all my outfits that I like to wear fit with what others expect of me. I have different styles like being comfortable and sometimes dressing up because it matches me and who I am. People would say that my outfits are cute and stuff. Summary: My style is mostly comfortable unless i feel like dressing up. I feel my outfits match who i am, and people usually see my style as cute. I don't think my clothing really goes against what others expect from me. Reflection: This made me realize that my clothing is a way i show my personality. I still choose outfits that make me feel like myself. It also shows that style doesn't have to be different from expectations to be meaningful, it just has to feel right to you.

The short film Born With It shows how stereotypes can shape the way people see others and even how individuals see themselves. Reflect on the main character’s experience and explain how stereotypes impacted his identity and sense of belonging. Then, connect this to a broader idea: how can stereotypes influence the way a culture or group is understood by others? Use specific examples from the film to support your response.

Prompt Response: Stereotypes affect how the main character is treated and how he sees his self. People judged him based on his appearance, especially his race and hair, and assumed negative things about him. Summary: The film shows how stereotypes cause others to judge the boy unfairly and affect how he feels about his self. Reflection: Stereotypes can make people feel like they don't belong. The film shows why it is important to treat people as humans instead of judging them based on their appearance.

Cities can also be an important part of a person’s cultural identity, shaping their values, experiences, and way of life. Think of a movie or TV show that changed the way you see a specific city. How was that city and its culture portrayed, and did it present a full picture or a “single story”? Explain how this portrayal could influence how people view those who live there.

Prompt Response:  In the movie, Atlanta is shown through the lives of teenagers dealing with relationships, family struggles, and growing up. It focuses a lot on roller skating culture, friendships, and some involvement with crime. The city is portrayed as having both fun social spaces and serious challenges, but it mainly highlights one side of life for certain communities. Summary:  The movie shows Atlanta as a place where young people are trying to figure out their future while dealing with real-life problems. It shows a strong sense of culture, especially with skating rinks and music, but it also includes themes like poverty and crime.   Reflection:  This kind of portrayal can make people think Atlanta is mostly about struggle or negative situations, which isn’t true for everyone. It creates a “single story” and doesn’t show how different and diverse the city really is.

Think about the most stereotypical film you have ever seen. This could be a movie that represents a specific culture, race, gender, or group in an oversimplified or unrealistic way. In your response, explain what film you are referring to, what stereotypes were present in the film, and how those stereotypes shaped your understanding of that group at the time

Prompt Response: The most stereotype movie I have ever seen was Zootopia. In the movie they were saying how a bunny couldn't be a police officer  because she was small and not seen as strong. This is a stereotype because they judged her based on what she looked like instead of her abilities. Summary:  The movie shows stereotypes by having different animals treated a certain way based on their species. In the movie, predators are seen as dangerous, and smaller animals like rabbits are seen as weak or not capable.   Reflection: This  made me realize how stereotypes can affect how people are treated, even if they are not true. It showed me that people can ffbe judged before they even get a chance to prove themselves . I think the movie helped me understand that stereotypes are unfair and that people should be judged based on who they are, not what others assume about them.

Why do you think filmmakers continue to use stereotypes, even when they can be harmful or inaccurate? Explain one reason discussed in class and give your opinion on whether this justifies their use.

Prompt Response: I  think filmmakers still use stereotypes because it makes it easier to tell a story quickly. Instead of spending a lot of time explaining a character, they use stereotypes so the audience already has an idea of who that person is. In   Maid in Manhattan , the main character fits the stereotype of a hardworking, lower-class maid trying to make a better life, which helps the audience understand her situation right away. Summary: One reason is that stereotypes saves time in telling a story. Reflection:  Even though stereotypes make things easier, I don’t think that’s a good enough reason to keep using them. They can be harmful because they don’t show people as individuals and can spread wrong ideas about certain groups.

Hair can be a powerful way people express who they are and where they come from. Think about your own hair, your style, texture, or how you choose to wear it. How does your hair connect to your culture or your identity? Describe a moment when your hair made you feel proud, uncomfortable, or misunderstood, and explain why.

Prompt Response: My hair connects to my identity by allowing me to express myself and express the type of person that I am. A moment when my hair made me feel proud was when I would wear it natural because it shows my natural curly hair and the density and texture of it, plus the shrinkage is what also makes me proud because it'll be long and healthy when it's flat ironed. Summary: My hair connects to my identity by the way it's naturally curly and the density.  Reflection: My hair is important to my identity because it allows me to express myself.
