Why do you think filmmakers continue to use stereotypes, even when they can be harmful or inaccurate? Explain one reason discussed in class and give your opinion on whether this justifies their use.

Prompt Response: I think filmmakers still use stereotypes because it makes it easier to tell a story quickly. Instead of spending a lot of time explaining a character, they use stereotypes so the audience already has an idea of who that person is. In Maid in Manhattan, the main character fits the stereotype of a hardworking, lower-class maid trying to make a better life, which helps the audience understand her situation right away.

Summary: One reason is that stereotypes saves time in telling a story.

Reflection: Even though stereotypes make things easier, I don’t think that’s a good enough reason to keep using them. They can be harmful because they don’t show people as individuals and can spread wrong ideas about certain groups.
